Hospital that did operation on wrong kneecap
Compiled by SHABANA FLORENCE, WINNIE YEOH and A. RAMAN
HOSPITALS in Singapore make at least one mistake a week.
Sin Chew Daily reported that statistics released by the island republic’s Health Ministry recently showed that it received 401 cases of reported mistakes in the last seven years.
Its general hospitals made 339 mistakes while the remaining mistakes were made by private hospitals.
Among the cases was a patient who underwent a kneecap replacement surgery and ended up with the wrong one operated on. There were five similar cases in the last four years.
Apart from that, five patients also had gauze left in their bodies after operations.
A recent case saw a doctor giving the wrong chemotherapy dosage to two cancer patients.
The daily reported yesterday that the department had requested hospitals since 2002 to submit such reports without naming the medical personnel responsible for the mistakes.
Hospitals are required to submit their reports weekly and guarantee that they would not commit the same mistake again.
The hospital representatives who fail to submit their reports can be fined about RM4,887 or face a jail term of up to a year or both.
Hospitals also run the risk of having their permits suspended if they repeatedly fail to submit the reports.

An equal chance to stay healthy
All of us have an indefinite chance to stay healthy. Look around even at ourselves, most of us wants to stay healthy. Some of us even went to an extend of abstaining certain food in order to avoid certain chronic degenerative diseases such as cholesterol, diabetes, HBP and etc. What I notice is a lot of them says they want to stay healthy but they end up not doing so; eating and doing whatever they like as if there is no tomorrow.
ALL TALK ONLY…. NO ACTION!
“I can avoid certain food”
“I can exercise regularly”
“I can drink more filtered & purified water to stay healthy”
Some of you may have the statement above in mind but is that really going to help or solve the problem? Let us study those 3 statements above together.
“I can avoid certain food”
What kind of food are you avoiding anyway? A lot of food that we eat today is either processed or well cooked. None of these 2 is good because processed food contains a lot of chemicals whereas well cooked food may not have anymore nutrient in it as it is destroyed while cooking. The best is eating raw food such as raw vegetable. How many of us are doing that and there are a lot of people who are particular about taste more than benefits. Again, that is also a problem. Thus, avoiding certain food is not going to help. They are saying it just to make themselves feel better.
“I can exercise regularly”
I totally agree that exercise is good but mind you, exercise is only part of health. It only makes you fit but not healthier. In order to stay healthy, it takes more than exercise alone. Food is also an important factor as well. If exercise can solve the problem, I believe there will be no need of doctors and everyone can settle their own problems by just exercising but I don’t see that happening thus far.
“I can drink more filtered & purified water to stay healthy”
Hmm…. I am not sure how true this statement is but I have been hearing a lot of people using this method to counter supplements. Maybe it is true in some way but let me share with you one thing that I understand. Everyday we are consuming a lot of “junk” from outside and those are toxin. There are 2 types of toxin; water soluble toxin and non-water soluble toxin. Water soluble toxin can be easily removed through sweat, urine or pass motion and that is when drinking clean water can help in a way. However, considering non-water soluble toxin, it will stay in the body or in our blood. And I believe the cleanest water can never do the job and that is when natural food supplements will do the job. That is why a lot of people’s blood is very dirty or in doctor’s term, the viscosity of the blood is very high.
Today, all of us have an equal chance to stay healthy but some choose to believe and some choose not to believe. In order to stay healthy, there are 3 th
ings that we must follow;
1) Regular Exercise
2) Eat the right food
3) Taking the right supplements

The benefits of fresh pineapple

Pineapple is high in manganese, a mineral that is critical to development of strong bones and connective tissue. A cup of fresh pineapple will give you nearly 75% of the recommended daily amount. It is particularly helpful to older adults, whose bones tend to become brittle with age.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme, is the key to pineapple's value. Proteolytic means "breaks down protein", which is why pineapple is known to be a digestive aid. It helps the body digest proteins more efficiently.
Bromelain is also considered an effective anti-inflammatory. Regular ingestion of at least one half cup of fresh pineapple daily is purported to relieve painful joints common to osteoarthritis. It produces mild pain relief. In Germany, bromelain is approved as a post-injury medication because it is thought to reduce inflammation and swelling.
Orange juice is a popular liquid for those suffering from a cold because it is high in Vitamin C. Fresh pineapple is not only high in this vitamin, but because of the bromelain, it has the ability to reduce mucus in the throat. If you have a cold with a productive cough, add pineapple to your diet. It is commonly used in Europe as a post-operative measure to cut mucus after certain sinus and throat operations. Those individuals who eat fresh pineapple daily report fewer sinus problems related to allergies. In and of itself, pineapple has a very low risk for allergies.
Pineapple is also known to discourage blood clot development. This makes it a valuable dietary addition for frequent fliers and others who may be at risk for blood clots.
An old folk remedy for morning sickness is fresh pineapple juice. It really works! Fresh juice and some nuts first thing in the morning often makes a difference. It's also good for a healthier mouth. The fresh juice discourages plaque growth.
